Long Thanh International Airport: Final Countdown to 2026 Operational Readiness
As of late April 2026, the construction site of Long Thanh International Airport (LTIA), Vietnam's future mega-hub, is defined by an atmosphere of intense focus and rapid transformation. Stepping into the final 12-month countdown before its scheduled operational debut, the massive project—located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of Ho Chi Minh City—is simultaneously tackling infrastructure completion and the complex logistics of readiness activation.

While the sheer scale of construction remains the dominant visual, the discourse is shifting rapidly toward operational reality. All primary stakeholders are now prioritizing the complex integration of systems required to transition from a construction site to a fully functional aviation gateway.

Here is the comprehensive status report on Long Thanh International Airport’s path to operational readiness:

Phase 1 Infrastructure: The Final Push

The physical landscape of the airport is rapidly solidifying, with core infrastructure entering the final stages of construction and equipment installation:

- The Passenger Terminal (Package 5.10): The centerpiece of Phase 1, the lotus-shaped terminal, is now 72% complete. Construction of the main structural shell is finished. The current focus is the delicate process of interior fit-out and the installation of specialized aviation systems. Contractors are prioritizing the deployment of the baggage handling system (BHS), advanced security screening arrays, jet bridges, and vertical transportation (elevators and escalators). The building is expected to be structurally sealed and weatherproofed by the end of 2026.

- Airside Operations: The primary runway and an extensive network of taxiways are visibly nearing completion. A critical component for full readiness, the fuel supply infrastructure (a project valued at nearly $120 million USD), has also entered its final implementation phase.

Regional Connectivity and Logistics

Recognizing that an airport is only as good as its access, regional authorities are accelerating vital connectivity projects:

- Surface Access: Work on critical road connectors T1 and T2 is proceeding rapidly. A significant milestone was achieved this April with the strategic opening of a 37-kilometer (23-mile) segment of the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway. This section is already providing crucial relief to the heavily congested National Highway 51, ensuring smoother logistics and eventual passenger flow.

- Future Transit: Feasibility studies and land acquisition planning are underway for the highly anticipated extension of the Ho Chi Minh City Metro system directly into the LTIA terminal.

- Economic Synergy: Demonstrating the airport's anticipated impact, regional planners have finalized zones for three specialized, "new-generation" industrial parks nearby, specifically designed to leverage the airport's robust logistics and cargo capabilities.

The Operational Roadmap: A Phased Migration

The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has finalized the strategic, two-phase operational readiness and airport transfer (ORAT) plan, outlining the migration from the aging Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City:

- Phase 1 (Operational Testing): June 2026. A comprehensive trial operations period will begin. This critical phase will test all integrated systems, including air traffic control, ground handling, security, and passenger flow management, to identify and resolve any operational bottlenecks.

- Phase 2 (Commercial Debut): December 1, 2026. The official commercial opening of Long Thanh International Airport.

A Strategic Passenger Shift

To ensure a smooth transition, ACV has detailed a strategic traffic reallocation plan:

- Initial Launch: Effective immediately upon the December 1, 2026 opening, all long-haul international flights and major cargo operations will migrate exclusively to Long Thanh. This is designed to immediately capture high-value traffic and relieve congestion at SGN.

- Projected Impact: LTIA is projected to handle approximately 19% of the Ho Chi Minh City region’s total international passenger volume within its first few months of operation.

- The 2027 Vision: The strategic goal is to migrate 90% of all international traffic from Tan Son Nhat to Long Thanh by the end of 2027, positioning LTIA as the premier international gateway for Southern Vietnam.

Conclusion: Long Thanh International Airport has transitioned from a vision to a tangible reality. Despite minor adjustments to management and ongoing resource challenges common in projects of this scale, the key milestones for 2026 readiness remain on schedule, driven by unwavering national focus and consistent execution. The final countdown has begun.
